Ian,
Again it is wonderful to see real bible truths being expressed. Worship in Spirit and in Truth, these are words of my youth being brought to know that worship is not about regulation or legalism but about knowing Christ in our heart, knowing the spirit of truth. Sadly though as time has gone on more and more we hear more about what man thinks instead of what God says. On baptism, you have hit the nail on the head, what you say is what the bible says, this is the way in which I was baptised many years ago and we continue to preach the gospel and to baptise in such a way, the way of the early church and the way in which it is recorded in the Act of the Apostles '...and the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.' Acts 2:47 And we know how they were being saved as Peter declared when asked '...men and brethren what shall we do..' in Acts 2:37 Peter replied '...Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.' Acts 2:38.
Well known passages I know, but as you comment, these seem to be forgotten as the inspired writtings of God and our instruction in the ordinances of the Church of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Thanks John for the questions about head coverings.

Briefly, in reply, yes the passage in 1 Corinthians 11 mentions prayer and prophesy, but the context of the whole passage (indeed the chapters immediately surrounding it also) is the public worship of God in the assembly, and Paul here is simply describing two of the main actions undertaken during such worship. Indeed when hearing the preaching of the gospel the believer's heart is drawn out in worship and praise of God and hence is in a state of prayer. Thus Paul is describing how the Headship of Christ should be demonstrated during the public worship of God. (That aside, from a merely practical viewpoint it would not seem entirely sensible for the women to be covering and then uncovering their heads at different points of the meeting.)

Yes, the form of head covering that Paul refers to at the time is indeed a veil, and the Greek word used in the passage does describe a veil. And if we wish to keep to the letter of the passage then a veil would be the best form of cover, but it isn't so much the 'letter' as the spirit which is important here, and the very fact that the head is being covered. Therefore a hat, or scarf, whilst not being a full veil, nevertheless covers the head and presents the picture of Headship which the ordinance is designed to convey.

Your last point regards what is a somewhat awkward wording in the Authorised Version (KJV) of the Bible which doesn't as clearly convey the intent of the Greek as might be wished. Essentially when Paul here says that if any man be contentious we have no such custom, and neither do the churches of God, he is meaning that we have no such custom of contending against this truth. He isn't referring to the practice of head coverings as the 'custom', but the contention, and he is indicating that none of the churches at that time contended against the practice, which was observed in all the churches. Unlike today.

Have a read of Gill's comments on the passage (as linked to in the notes above) which I think you'll find helpful.

Thanks again,
Ian

Concerning headcoverings;

Doesn't the scripture teach that women are to cover their heads when they pray or prophesy? Does this not show that they do not have to cover their heads all the way through a meeting?

The form of head covering that Paul refers to would have been a veil, not a hat.

However Paul does state that if someone wants to argue they didn't have this rule in the other churches.

Would this not indicate that this instruction was applicable in certain circumstances, and not universal?

I have personally found this message a blessing and would encourage others to listen to it.

This is what the Church so much needs - Gospel preaching. When the Gospel is truly preached (with it's offence) then the true child of God can verily say "I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD"

Clare,

I’m not too sure of where you might find 2nd hand copies of that book, but if it helps, I can point you to where you can read the book online. Not the same as having it in print, I know, but very helpful nonetheless. Take a look at: http://www.grace-ebooks.com/ where there are a number of free online books, including all of Don Fortners. Basic Bible Doctrine is at: http://grace-ebooks.com/library/index.php?dir=Don%20Fortner/&file=DF_Basic%20Bible%20Doctrine.pdf
